What is OBCC's path of Discipleship?

The Great Commission tells us to go forth and make disciples. One  of the most essential ingredients in making disciples is Christian education.

2 Timothy 2:15 says:  “Present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the Word of Truth.”

It is important that we know how to “handle” the Word of Truth. It is a lifelong learning process. The desire to know the heart of God for your life is what will give you strength when times are hard and it is what will give you peace in the midst of a confused world.

Mature in the DREAM as you walk the Discipleship Path at OBCC. All of our classes fit within the D.R.E.A.M. framework:

D--Devotional life: represents your direct relationship with God. This foundational relationship effects every other relationship and all of the DREAM.

R--Relationships: represents the horizontal relationships you have with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, believers and non-believers

E--Evangelism: represents your personal testimony and sharing of your faith

A--Attitude: represents the mindset of Christ, that of faith, humility and service

M--Ministry: represents the use of the gifts that God has given each one of us to minister to one another, to our community, and to all the world in every sphere of influence.

How to live the D.R.E.A.M.

D=Devotional Life               THE KINGDOM PRINCIPLE:  Life with Christ

The devotional life of a believer speaks specifically to the relationship that one has with Jesus Christ.  It comes to grips with the first and greatest command: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)  Our personal devotional life is all about developing character.

We must know what the character of God is like.  We discover this not by watching other people, but by spending time with God Himself.  He reveals His character through His Word. A second aspect of the devotional life is communication.

God is constantly communicating through His Word the Bible.  However, we need to have conversation with God as well.  As one reads through the Word of God, one quickly discovers that God not only seeks, but actually communicates one on one with people. These two aspects: the Word of God and our prayer life equals our devotional life.  We take that to the level we personally desire.  The Kingdom principle this reinforces is our life with Christ.

R=Relationship                    THE KINGDOM PRINCIPLE:  Love one another

I am unaware of anyone who can make it through life without someone else.  We are designed for relationship.  Everything God designs is all about relationship: family; church; work all of life.  We learn all about how to do relationship right, including resolving conflict right out of the Word of God.  I don’t know a higher priority for us in a culture so messed up with so much relational dysfunction than handling relationships right. There are 14 “one another” instructions in the New Testament. If the instructions of these “one another’s” were practiced daily with everyone we came in contact with, our dysfunctional issues would be gone.

E=Evangelism      THE KINGDOM PRINCIPLE:  God is unwilling that any should perish.

The foundation remember that we are building on is Jesus Christ.  The very reason that we even know about Jesus Christ is because:  “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”  2 Peter 3:9 “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”  Evangelism is NOT an option for any believer.  We are to share our faith both by our lifestyle and by our ability to communicate.

A=Attitude                            THE KINGDOM PRINCIPLE:  Humility

Philippians 2:3-16 In a land and culture filled with so many emotions it is extremely important for us to be constantly checking our attitude.  We are not to be measuring it against the pastor, or our mentor, but against Christ.  Remember He is the foundation.  He is the measuring stick.  Have we the same attitude of Christ.

M=Ministry                            THE KINGDOM PRINCIPLE:  Service

Galatians 5:13, “Serve one another through love.” Matthew 20:27-28, “And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave. Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” I want to suggest something to you today.  It wasn’t a pain for Jesus to serve others.  It wasn’t like He was going to make His way through this, if it killed Him.  Listen teenager, listen dad, you ought to consider it all joy to be able to serve your siblings and your family, your mother and your wife.  Ladies, one of your greatest joys in life should be to serve.  We live in such a welfare mentality we think somebody owes us something.  You owe those you know something.  You owe them to serve them in love. We all need to take a good look at our life and see if we are following right model in our life.

What Type of Classes do we offer?

DisciplerEvery quarter specific "Core" courses will be offered under each of the categories so that if you miss one this quarter, it may be available again in an upcoming quarter. Core courses are designed specifically to help you become a mature Christian and enable a deeper, personal relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We encourage that you start with the Core courses as they will help build your life on the solid foundation of the Word of God. (Matthew 7:24-27)

All other courses are electives. We want to encourage you to choose a class that will help you grow in the areas where you most need instruction, encouragement and strengthening. Our desire is that during your time in CE you may develop relationships with others in the body of Christ as well.

Courses that are scheduled for times other than Wednesday or Sunday are called “Small Group” courses. These may be held at the Church or at a home location of one of our Partners.
