Luke 5

It is interesting that Luke calls Shim’on [Simon] by his given name, and then in verse 8 he calls him Shim’om Kefa [Simon Peter, or more correctly Simon the Rock] when “the Rock” falls at Yeshua’s feet.Verse 23: Amazement seized them and the “praised God.” Actually the word is b’rakhah a blessing. Today the Jews have blessings for all things. There is evidence that these blessings were used before Yeshua’s time and codified in the Talmud. They usually begin “Blessed are you, Adonai, our God, King of the universe…. The end may be for a flower, a rainbow, people, commandments, Shabbat, and Holy Days. Aren’t we supposed to praise Him and think about Him awake and asleep etc?The tax-collector called Levi. Levi was name that was most certainly given to a descendent  of the tribe of Levi which means he was set aside for Temple service. This is not unusual because a large number of Levi’im (Levites also cokanim, priests) were trusting in Yeshua. Acts 4:36 and Acts 6:7.

Luke 4

Since it was mentioned before that to the Jewish person when one quotes part of a portion of Scripture they are actually quoting the entire Scripture let’s look at the Scripture Yeshua referred to in this Chapter.Deut 8:3: He afflicted you and let you hunger, then he fed you manna that you did not know, nor did your forefathers know, in order to make you know that not by bread alone does man live, rather by everything that emanates from the mouth of God does man live. Deut 6:13-14: HASHEM, your God, shall you fear, Him shall you serve, and in His Name shall you swear. You shall not follow after gods of others, of the gods of the people that are around you.  This is all part of the Sh’ma – Hear, Oh Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. As stated in the Chumash Hebrew translation, “Hear, O Israel: HASHEM is our God, HASHEM is the One and Only.”He quotes Psalm 91:11-12.Deut 6: 16: You shall not test HASHEM, your God, as you test Him at Massah. He combines Isaiah 61: 1-2 and 58:6. This is the Tanakh translation of the quotes. Remember, to the Jew, a partial quote is a complete quote:    The spirit of my Lord, HASHEM/ELOHIM, is upon me, because HASHEM has anointed me to bring tidings to the humbled; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for captives and release from bondage for the imprisoned, to proclaim a year of favor unto HASHEM, and a day of vengeance for our God, to comfort all mourners….    Surely this is the fast I choose: To break open the shackles of wickedness, to undo the bonds of injustice, and to let the oppressed go free, and annul perversion…Notice two things: To get the whole meaning you must look at the entire verse and its context; and, two parts of Isaiah are quoted. The first applies to the Messiah and the second applies to those who serve God.

Luke 2

The inn – most likely a small town like Bethlehem would not have had an inn. As in ancient Iceland the animals and people usually lived in the same quarters. In Iceland they had sod buildings with 2 rooms: one for the animals and one for the humans. In Israel it is thought the animals were on the ground floor and the humans on the top floor. Chances are they stayed with the animals on the bottom floor. Not December – the sheep were not pastured usually past October because of Israel’s climate.  Sept/Oct is also the time of Rosh HaShana, the civil new year, the feast of Trumpets, the announcement of the new kings and new year.I am announcing the birth of a Deliverer who is the Messiah.Joseph, Mary and Yeshua go to the Temple for the Pidyon HaBen, redemption of the firstborn per Numbers 3 and 18. I will explain this later.Everything done is done in accordance with God’s commands in Torah. Yeshua was Jewish through and through. BTW only Mary had to be purified according to Torah.Verse 41 refers to Passover one of the three pilgrimage journeys required by God.

Luke 3

Notice again, “If you really have turned from your sins, produce work that will prove it!” James said, “Faith not accompanied by good works is dead.”Verse 15 says the people were in great expectancy about the Messiah. Wonder why? I mean it was 30 years after the star and magi incident.

Luke 1

Luke actually records quite a bit of history and gives us the key to when Yeshua was born. This key is important because it provides us with another partial fulfillment of the meanings of the Holy Days.Verse 35 reads: The Ruach HaKodesh will come over you, the power of Ha’Elyon will cover you…. Literally:  The Holy Spirit. To the Jews, the third pillar of God, the undefinable One, The Unique One, Ayn Sof. Ha’Elyon is literally the highest, most high. (Gen 14: 18-20).Miryam’s  (Mary) response should be compared to  1 Sam 1:11, 2:1When Z’kharyah said his blessing could we assume this experience was that of a righteous man who lacked faith and was chastised to deepen his faith? Ever wonder why God chose the 8th day for a baby boy’s circumcision? Medical science has proven this is the precise time when the blood coagulates quickest, pain will be minimized, and the body will heal the quickest. Interesting! This chapter is full of Tanakh quotes. To the Jew quoting part of Torah is the same as quoting the entire passage – another reason the New Testament quotes are not in error.
